MURPHYSBORO – The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says a Nashville, Illinois man died in a single-vehicle crash Saturday on U.S. 51 in rural Makanda.
According to the sheriff’s office, around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to the crash on U.S. 51 about a quarter mile north of Rifle Range Road.
The caller reported that a white Ford F-250 pickup truck 45-year-old Gabriel T. Shubert was driving was off the roadway, had struck a tree and was on fire. The fire spread from the truck and into a wooded area.
A preliminary investigation showed Shubert was going north on U.S. 51. The truck gradually departed the roadway to the right, when down a slight embankment, and stuck a tree. Shubert was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown a short distance from the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office.
