WEST FRANKFORT – An 8-year-old girl was struck by a car at the intersection of South Van Buren and East Summers streets in West Frankfort Monday afternoon.

West Frankfort Police Chief John Prudent tells us officers responded to the scene at 2:45 p.m. When officers arrived they found the girl had been struck by a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, 46-year-old Becky L. Hayes of Benton, was still on scene.  Upon completion of the accident investigation, Hayes was cited for Disobeying Stop Sign, Failure to Yield-Stop or Yield Intersection, and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. 

The West Frankfort Fire Department/EMS transported the girl to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for treatment of her injuries. The girl was later airlifted to a St. Louis hospital for further treatment.
