SOUTHERN ILLINOIS – We’re going to experience a heat wave as temperatures will be increasing heading into mid to late week.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, while an isolated shower or storm may occur in a few areas today and Wednesday, much of the region likely will stay dry. The heat dome appears like it will intensify over us Thursday and Friday when heat index values may exceed 105. Thunderstorm chances look to return at some point over the coming weekend as a front approaches.
Here are some safety tips to keep in mind during this heat wave.
Check in on the elderly or ill family members and neighbors. Limit strenuous outdoor activity to the early morning or evening hours. When outdoors, take frequent breaks in an air-conditioned building and drink plenty of water. Find some shade if possible. Never leave your child or pet in an unattended vehicle. Also, if you can bring your pets inside, do so. If your pet has to stay outside, make sure they have plenty of fresh water to drink and a shady spot to escape the heat.
