HERRIN – A woman was recently cited on multiple offenses after the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said she committed several traffic violations in the area of Grant Drive in Herrin and led deputies on a high-speed chase on her motorcycle and then on foot.
According to the sheriff’s office, this happened around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8.
The sheriff’s office says a traffic stop was initiated at which time the motorcycle fled reaching speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour traveling through city streets.
The suspect failed to obey numerous stop signs, and while traveling southbound on 22nd Street, the driver left the roadway and continued up a driveway in the 800 block of West Brewster Road.
Deputies continued to pursue the motorcycle, and at the end of the driveway, the operator of the motorcycle laid it down and attempted to flee on foot.
Deputies issued multiple verbal commands to stop and ultimately pushed the suspect to the ground to prevent flight while the suspect continued to actively resist deputies.
The suspect, who was wearing a helmet, physically fought deputies efforts to identify and detain. Deputies were able to handcuff the suspect while the driver continued to resist.
The motorcycle’s registration was discovered to be a fictitious document printed on a piece of paper.
Once detained, deputies removed the driver’s helmet and discovered the suspect to be a 59 year old woman who was later identified as Julie M. Puffer.
Although handcuffed, Puffer continued to actively resist deputies efforts to conduct a search of her person. They found over 15 grams of meth, over 6 grams of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.
Puffer, while in the custody of Williamson County Sheriff’s Office correctional officers, was examined at an area hospital out of an abundance of caution.
The motorcycle was towed and impounded. Asset forfeiture proceedings have been initiated to seize the motorcycle.
Puffer was issued citations for Methamphetamine Delivery 5-15g, Possession of Methamphetamine 5-15g, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting a Peace Officer, Possession of Adult Use Cannabis in a Motor Vehicle, Driving While License Revoked, and Improper Use or Evidence of Registration.
After being released from the hospital, Puffer was transported to and remanded into the custody of the Williamson County Jail.
