WAMAC (WMIX) – A 45-year-old Mt. Vernon man was injured and his dog killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on U.S. 51 north of the Country Bob’s plant.

According to crash reports, Robert Biggs was traveling southbound on U.S. 51 when lost control of his pickup truck just south of Wamac after embers from a cigarette reportedly blew into his face.

The crash occurred just before 3 p.m. Friday on US 51 north of the Country Bob’s Plant just south of the Wamac city limits.

After Biggs lost control of his truck, it ramped over the Yards Road intersection and barrel rolled several times striking an Ameren power pole. The impact caused the pole to break in two, but the lines didn’t fall.

Biggs was out of the vehicle when Centralia Police officers and Centralia firefighters arrived on the scene.

Biggs was transported by Lifestar Ambulance to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia for treatment of a head laceration.
