WEST FRANKFORT – Firefighters from West Frankfort and the surrounding area battled a house fire that affected some nearby homes early Monday morning in the 600 block of South Sunnyslope Street in West Frankfort.
According to the West Frankfort Fire Department, firefighters were sent to the scene around 5:15 a.m. When they arrived, they found the home fully engulfed with fire on the main floor and also fire throughout the attic space. The exposed homes to the north and south became the priority of concern and efforts.
Due to the advanced progression of the fire and limited water supply on the first arriving engine, mutual aid was called. The fire progressed into the vacant home to the north and damaged the home to the south, but the occupied home to the south was saved while suffering damage to the exterior of that home.
Mutual aid was provided by Benton, Herrin, Johnston City, Zeigler, Buckner, Williamson County Fire Protection District, and Abbott AMR.
West Frankfort Fire was also assisted by MABAS Division 68 dispatch for all dispatching efforts of the incident.
One firefighter received minor burns to their hand and was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The West Frankfort Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal are investigating the fire.
