MURPHYSBORO – A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 17 in Jackson County Court Friday for 49-year-old Daron L. Woods of Murphysboro.

Woods was in court Friday for a detention hearing. He is charged with First-degree Murder in the shooting death of 29-year-old Maurice Funches of Murphysboro and one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon for stabbing Clyde Boozer Wednesday in Murphysboro.
Woods turned himself in without incident Thursday night at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
The incidents happened in the 200 block of North 13th Street.
An investigation by Murphysboro Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office suggested two men were reportedly involved in an altercation, and during the altercation, Woods wielded a knife and stabbed Boozer. Funches, who was the third man, intervened to assist Boozer and was later shot and killed by Woods. Boozer was later treated at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for his injuries and released.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by the family of Maurice Funches to help pay for funeral expenses.
