MURPHYSBORO – Do you want to understand how to participate in your local Christmas Bird Count (CBC)? Learn the ABCs of a CBC during one of the free workshops offered during the month of November.

The CBC is the nation’s longest-running community science bird project, which has been active for over a century through the National Audubon Society. Did you know most counts in southern Illinois are almost a 30-year tradition? As a CBC participant, you will coordinate with your local compiler prior to the count date. The workshop will cover National Audubon Policies and local count circles. Learn the basics, practice counting with an expert, and discover how to sign up for free bird counting events during one of the following workshops:

• November 8 from 1-2 p.m. at Giant City State Park (235 Giant City Rd., Makanda, IL 62958)

• November 13 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Pinckneyville Community Center (203 N. Walnut St, Pinckneyville, IL 62274)

• November 17 from 1-2 p.m. at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge (8588 IL-148, Marion, IL 62959)

• November 30 from 10-11 a.m. at Rend Lake Project Visitor Center (11981 Rend City Rd, Benton, IL 62812)
