CARBONDALE – As the weather gets colder, the opportunities for burglaries to vehicles and vehicle thefts increase. It is not uncommon for vehicle owners to start and leave motor vehicles running during this time of year to allow the interior to warm-up and/or to make it easier to remove snow and ice from the windows. Many times these vehicles are left unattended and unlocked, giving an opportunistic thief time to steal the vehicle or take property. This practice is also a violation of Illinois State Law concerning unattended vehicles unless the vehicle is locked and utilizes a remote starting device.
The Carbondale Police Department recommends the following tips to reduce becoming a victim of a burglary to your vehicle:
- Keep your vehicle doors locked at all times.
- Park your vehicle in a locked garage or where there is plenty of light and it is visible to passing patrol cars.
- Keep your windows closed.
- Don’t leave valuables in the vehicle when unattended.
- Don’t leave items out in plain view.
- Consider a remote starting feature for times when you need to start your vehicle prior to leaving when clearing ice from the windows.
Many times a person looking to steal a vehicle, or items from inside, can be seen slowly walking by cars and casually attempt to lift the door handles to see if the door is unlocked. Police urge residents and visitors to Carbondale to immediately call the police department if they see this type of activity. You can also use your cell phone or residential security camera to record their activity to use as evidence for police officers in their investigation. Working together we can help prevent burglaries in Carbondale. Stay safe.
