METROPOLIS – The Metropolis Police Department released the following information on Monday, June 17, 2024.

On June 11, 2024, Metropolis officers were called to the Marathon Speedy Mart on West 12th. The caller advised that the suspect had entered the store, made herself a slushie and left without paying for it. The caller advised that she informed the thief twice that she needed to pay for it. The theft was captured on video. The caller and officers knew the offender, Jade S. Calmese, 32, of Avondale, AZ, from previous encounters. The officer drove to the Fairmount Apartments where Calmese was staying. Upon arrival, he observed her outside the residence drinking from a Marathon labeled cup. Calmese started walking away even after numerous shouts to stop. She entered the residence. Calmese’s grandmother came out the front door. The officer explained the circumstances and Calmese finally came outside. She was arrested for theft and obstructing. One placed in the caged area of the squad car, she began kicking the window and making suicidal threats. She also threatened to shoot the officer. She was taken to Massac Memorial Hospital. She was uncooperative at the hospital. Once cleared transported to the Massac County Detention Center pending a hearing.    

On June 11, 2024, a Metropolis officer clocked a vehicle on I-24 at 89 mph in a posted 70 mph zone by radar. A traffic stop was conducted on U.S. 45 and I-24. A computer check showed that the vehicle had suspended registration plates. The driver, Makala A. Harris, 22, of Metropolis was arrested. A search revealed her to be in possession of Clonazepam and Fentanyl. Harris was charged with speeding, operation of a motor vehicle with suspended registration and possession of controlled substance x2. She was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.
